The group of Harald Herrmann contributes his knowledge and experience about the structure and assembly of intermediate filament proteins and of cytoplasmic crossbridging factors such as plectin and microtubule-associated proteins (MAPs). In particular, the mesenchymal protein vimentin as well as the muscle-specific protein desmin including disease-causing mutants forms of the latter protein were in the center of interest. Moreover, nuclear lamins from various sources have been recombinantly synthesized in order to investigate their structure and assembly properties. Using GFP-tagged versions, the importance of lamin mutations is followed by life cell imaging.
